The blue atlas or Cedrus atlantica is originally from the Atlas mountains in Algeria and Morocco. The one pictured is full grown at 135 feet tall and about 38 feet wide. The Atlas is known for its bright blue-green needles that make great contrast against winter snow. Atlas saplings are very difficult to cultivate, but once they start growing well, they never seem to stop. The Blue atlas has an unusual growing pattern for a conifer tree; it branches up instead of down like other fir and brush trees. This particular tree was expensive as a sapling – and is now in such good health that is worth $3,000-$4,000 dollars.
